Whispers from History
In medieval Europe, valuable personal items were often worn rather than stored.
Clothing frequently included hidden pockets or pouches, and belts were used to carry keys, seals, and small treasures. Lockable chests existed, but keeping important items on one’s person was often safer than leaving them behind.
In Regency England, receiving a letter could be an expensive decision.
Postage was typically paid by the recipient, with costs based on distance and the number of sheets. This led to the creation of “cross-writing” and subtle folded codes, allowing messages—sometimes affectionate ones—to be conveyed without the letter ever being opened or paid for.
Echoes by Firelight is a private imprint and does not accept submissions.
